The AI advantage belongs to the human

Why AI makes great travel advisors more valuable than ever.

The advisors who win this decade won't be the most technical. They'll be the ones who let AI carry the weight, so they can do more of what only they can do.

Last week I had the privilege of speaking to a packed room of 600 travel advisors at Travel Market Place in Toronto, followed by a hands-on workshop on putting AI to work. I was inspired by how ready the room was to move past the noise, start using AI well, and how hungry it was for a mental model for AI, and how it can transform your business.

Between the hype and the fear.


For thirty years, they've been writing your obituary. Starting with the rise of the online travel agencies, everyone from CNN to Fox News to Harvard Business Review has counted you out, and just last year the World Economic Forum warned that AI could erase half of all agent roles by 2030. The headline never changes: the travel advisor is finished.

And yet, there those 600 advisors sat, busier and more in demand than ever. The real question isn't whether they're wrong again. It's why they keep getting it wrong.

So let me be direct. AI might be the single greatest business opportunity of our lifetimes. Used well, it doesn't replace your expertise. It makes it more valuable than ever.

AI has moved fast, from automating simple tasks, to generating content, to agentic systems that don't just answer a question but act, working through twenty steps to accomplish your goal. The pace keeps doubling, so assume whatever AI can't quite do for you today, it can within a year.

In fact, 88% of organizations already use AI, yet only a small fraction say they have truly put it to work. That gap, between dabbling and mastering, is your whole opportunity.

Still, there are places where AI falls down, with countless examples of misinformation and hallucination.  This is because AI tools are confident, fluent, and completely unaccountable. When it's wrong, a human still has to own it.

That leaves four things AI simply doesn’t possess and can’t do: judgment, accountability, real relationship, and presence. That's the list that makes all travel advisors and agencies irreplaceable.

And the data proves it. The travelers using AI the most aren't abandoning advisors, they're booking them more. Gen Z and Millennials are the most AI-fluent generation and also the fastest growing segment using travel advisors. They don't want AI or a human. They want both. Inspiration from the bot, but pass along planning to the trusted professional.

AI does the doing. You do the human.


And we’ve all seen this story before. When the ATM arrived, everyone said it was the end of the bank teller. The opposite happened. The number of tellers went up and there’s now a branch on every corner. The machine took the cash-counting; the human moved on to what actually mattered, helping people.

That's your moment. Let AI take the transaction. You take the relationship.

So where do you start? Don't ask what AI can do. Ask where you're the bottleneck. Pull up your week and look honestly at where the hours go.

How much is the work clients actually hired you for, the judgment and taste and relationship, and how much is the doing: chasing confirmations, formatting itineraries, copying details between systems at 11pm? That second list is the tax on your growth. Hand it to AI and buy those hours back. The mental model is that simple: delegate your bottleneck, never your magic.

Used this way, AI makes you roughly 40% faster, and it helps your newest team members the most.

The future of travel isn't human or machine. It's human, amplified by machine.
