Visit the District of Alamar located on the outskirts of Havana. This expansive social housing project was started in the 1970's. The Soviet-style prefabricated concrete apartment blocks are now home to more than a hundred thousand Cubans. Among these building there are community gardens, called "Organopónicos," where residents grow fruit, vegetables and herbs for their own consumption and local sales. These are similar to co-op and community gardens in the US. The Organopónicos facilitate community development while giving Alamar's residents access to fresh produce which they can sell.
Visit The Office of the Historian of the City which is the local authority managing heritage and the coordinating organizations of the comprehensive rehabilitation program of Old Havana. Enjoy a tour which will inform you of the ongoing successful recovery and rehabilitation of heritage which at the same time carries out intense social work for the benefit of the local population. This tour will give you insight to the unique approach to the management model based on self-financing and to the principles supporting the responsible development of tourism in the territory, get to know centers and institutions related to social assistance, and visit the local school of trades.
