Lucca walking and biking tour

Even though neglected by mass tourism, Lucca is an unmissable destination in Tuscany. Despite it is relatively small site, its city center hosts amazing monuments and sights, dating from Roman age to renaissance.

But what makes Lucca really unique are its Renaissance-era city walls that have remained intact while so many other Tuscan towns saw theirs destroyed in past centuries.

On top of the city walls (built between the first half of the sixteenth and mid seventeenth century the Walls of Lucca are intact until today), here are the things you shouldn't miss in your tour:

  • San Michele in foro: the church is built in the large square that was originally the Roman Forum in the center of Lucca. It’s a beatiful square, lined with medieval buildings housing cafes, shops, and homes.
  • Piazza anfiteatro: it's one of Lucca landmarks, nearly as famous as its walls. It’s an oval shaped piazza, that was once a Roman amphitheater. Buildings and houses were built around the arena during the middle ages, giving the square its oval shape.
  • Basilica di San Frediano: its facade is decorated with a stunning 13th century Byzantine-style mosaic. Made mostly with gold leaf mosaic that glow beautifully in the sunlight, there’s also a little color to make the apostles and Christ stand out. T
  • Duomo di San Martino: Lucca’s cathedral, dedicated to San Martino or Saint Martin, sits on Piazza San Martino surrounded by impressive medieval buildings. Originally build in the 12th to 13th centuries, it’s Romanesque in style and has an intricately decorated marble facade. The interior is Gothic and holds good artworks, including the Volto Santo and the 15th century touching tomb Ilaria del Carretto, a masterpiece by Jacopo della Quercia.

Your guided tour will include the highlights of that adorable town: the Renaissance walls, the Amphitheater square, Saint Michael square, the more beautiful and narrow medieval streets until Guinigi tower, cathedral square and of course San Frediano church. The tour will be 50% by bike and 50% by walking, for 2 hours in total.

Pisa Campo dei Miracoli and leaning tower

Pisa is a world known town north of Florence, home of the "leaning tower", one of Italy icons.

The first sight not to be missed is Piazza dei Miracoli (“Square of Miracles”), the huge square hosting the tower, the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the monumental graveyard. The square is surrounded by a beautiful green lawn, and the contrast between the green grass and the dazzling white monuments has always struck me.

Santa Maria Assunta, the awsome Cathedral, dominates the square with its beautiful Romanesque architecture. It hosts many important works of art, such as the great mosaic of St. John the Evangelist in the apse (1302) by Cimabue, or the Pulpit, a masterpiece by Giovanni Pisano.

If you plan to climb on top of Pisa tower you should reserve well in advance your ticket (of course we can help you).

Discover Monteriggioni

The lovely and off the beaten path Monteriggioni hamlet stands on top of a low hill whose slopes are dotted with olive trees and vines, a few km from Siena.

The castle was founded in the second decade of the 13th century by the Republic of Siena. Its main aim was to create a defensive outpost against its rival, Florence. For centuries the site carried out this function for which it was created, resisting countless sieges and attacks, one after the other. Its military function became less important in the second half of the 16th century, when the whole state of Siena, which the borgo was part of, was annexed to the state of Florence.

Today, Monteriggioni is a perfectly preserved fortified village. You can walk on the city walls to admire the Tuscan countryside, and eat in one of the local restaurants.

Lunch at restaurant "Da Remo" (suggested)

Ristorante Da Remo is a family-run restaurant in Monteriggioni, Tuscany, Italy. It serves traditional Tuscan cuisine, including pasta, grilled meats, and wild game. The restaurant has a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The menu at Ristorante Da Remo features all of the classic Tuscan dishes, such as pappardelle al cinghiale (homemade pappardelle with wild boar), pici al Cacio di Pienza (homemade pici with Cacio di Pienza cheese), and bistecca alla Fiorentina (grilled Florentine steak). The restaurant also offers a variety of vegetarian and vegan options.

In addition to its delicious food, Ristorante Da Remo is also known for its friendly service and its welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

Explore the Middle Ages on a self guided walking tour of Siena

Siena is (alongside Florence) one of the most fascinating Tuscan cities, with centuries of history, battles and art in its story.

This walking tour will take you through the most beautiful corners, squares and streets of the city. Saint Domenic Church is where you will start your exploration and will learn about Siena's most famous lady - Saint Catherine.

From San Domenico, follow the footsteps of the many pilgrims that crossed this city during the Middle Ages walking along the main street and reaching the Cathedral, one of the most beautiful Gothic churches of Italy. Here Michelangelo, Donatello, Bernini and so many others have enriched the church with fantastic works of art. The interior is simply breathtaking!

Finish your walk in heart of the city, the Campo Square. This is is one of the most beautiful square in the world, where twice a year there is the famous horse race competition "the Palio".

Don't forget to try the typical pastries (Ricciarelli, Panforte and Panpepato) at the famous Nannini café, close to the Campo square.

In case you would like more assistance we can arrange a guided tour

Visit San Giminiano, the Manhattan of the Middle Ages

A visit to San Gimignano is a complete immersion into the 1300s borgo ambience. In fact, the city (still mostly intact today) is one of the best examples of a medieval town in terms of planning and organisation.

The overriding characteristic of San Gimignano – that just about every visitor will notice from a distance – are its spectacular and unmistakable towers that watch over the scene. And each one has its own history.

The town experienced a period of economic wealth and artistic flourish, above all in the mid-1300s, thanks to the merchants and pilgrims traveling along the Via Francigena; the route passed through San Gimignano, dividing it into two. It was also during this time that the town’s foremost families challenged each other in building the highest tower, attempts to exhibit who held the most power.

Around the year 1300, 70 towers symbolized the 70 wealthy families inhabiting this territory. Today, only 13 remain standing. It is the Tuscany that travelers love most, set amidst fields of golden grain, vineyards and ancient hamlets.

Self drive in Val D'Orcia May 22

Wine tasting in Montalcino

Today you will discover one of the most famous Italian wines: the Brunello di Montalcino.

You will drive to the renown historical Fanti winery, where you will experience a guided tours of the cellar followed by a tasting of the estate wines and extra virgin olive oil.

The wine cellar is located in the valley of Castelnuovo dell'Abate (which lies in the south of Montalcino) in front of the medieval Abbey of Saint Antimo. Winery visits are available upon reservation in English and French.

Sant'Antimo abbey (optional)

The romanic Abbey of Sant’Antimo is a former Benedictine monastery a few kilometres from Montalcino. It’s located in a breathtaking natural setting, close to the Via Francigena, the medieval pilgrim route to Rome, and is an unmissable destination if you plan to visit the Val d’Orcia area.

Sant’antimo is an extraordinary Romanesque abbey, one of the most important in the whole Tuscany.

It’s famous not only for the elegance of its lines, but also for its setting in a beautifull valley, surrounded by wooded hills, olive groves and wine yards.

Founded by the Longobards around 770, the abbey received the seal of emperor Charlemagne on his return from Rome in 781.

The present church was build in 1118, to replace the original “Carolingian chapel”. The interior will strike you with with its alabaster walls and columns.

Discover Bagno Vignoni

Bagno Vignoni is very unique: nowhere else in Italy will you find its main central square has a pool filled with hot springs water. 49 meters long and 29 meters wide, the Renaissance-era piazza is built directly over the original source of hot springs as enjoyed by the Romans.

Since the 9th century, the springs here and in Bagni San Filippo, located a bit further south at the foot of the Monte Amiata, have been mentioned in old travel journals of abbots and others making their pilgrimage down to Rome (and many on to Jerusalem).

The hot springs in Bagno Vignoni have always allowed water to flow even during the warm summer months, thus several water mills were constructed along the Orcia river over the centuries. These ancient mills, along with a complex system of water canals and gorges today constitute the Parco dei Mulini, or Park of the Mills, created in the 1990s.

Don't forget to bring along a swim suit and towel when visiting to enjoy the hot springs. Of course, you can take a break for a whole day and enjoy the many spas.

This is also a good place to have lunch, we suggest Osteria del Leone for great local specialties.

San quirico d'Orcia landscapes

In the heart of Tuscany, Italy, the landscapes surrounding San Quirico d'Orcia are characterized by their distinctive cypress trees, which punctuate the gentle, undulating hills of the region.

These cypress trees, tall and slender, stand against the backdrop of the Italian countryside, creating a scene that is both tranquil and visually striking. Among the noteworthy spots to observe these landscapes is the vicinity of the Chapel of Vitaleta. This small chapel, perched on a hill and accessible by a path surrounded by cypresses, represents a picturesque example of the area's charm.

Another significant spot is the road near San Quirico d'Orcia, where the alignment of cypress trees along the routes offers captivating views, particularly at the beginning and end of the day.

To find these scenic views, one might venture along the SR2 road and explore adjacent paths, where the blend of natural and cultivated elements forms a serene and visually appealing tableau.

Indulge in Pienza

Pienza is a small jewel of the Val d'Orcia, known as the town of Pope Pius II, born Enea Silvio Piccolomini in 1405. Once Pius II became pope, he wanted to transform his humble hometown, Corsignano, into an urban-architectural treasure.

He thus entrusted the total renovation of the village to the architect Bernardo Rossellino and the humanist Leon Battisti Alberti, who in just four years, from 1459 to 1462, defined the harmonious and typically 15th-century appearance of what would be Pienza today.

Walking through the historic center, in the Piazza Pio II, a visit to the Duomo, the Cathedral of the Assumption, is not to be missed. Inside it houses important and remarkable paintings by the most renowned artists of the time, while the beautiful octagonal-shaped bell tower rises above the ancient crypt.

Opposite the cathedral is the Palazzo Comunale, a historic building dating back to the mid-1400s with its main feature: the wide loggia cha has on the facade. Also in the main square, stands the imposing Piccolomini Museum-Palazzo Piccolomini with its hanging garden from which you can admire a truly unique panorama of the entire Val d'Orcia, from Montalcino to Monte Amiata. Completing the closure of the central square is the Palazzo Borgia, home of the Diocesan Museum of Pienza.

The wonderful walk along the ancient walks has been named “Via dell’Amore” (no need to translate…), and offers fantastic views over the Val d’Orcia.

Further along, stop at Positano’s Scenic Terrace for a panoramic view of its pastel-colored houses cascading down to the sea. Before reaching Amalfi, enjoy a final stop at the Furore Fjord, a hidden coastal gorge with a dramatic stone bridge.

Wine tasting at Marisa Cuomo vineyard

Among vines and rocks rising vertically over the sea of Furore, we find Cantine Marisa Cuomo.

The grapes that grow here, clinging to the rocks of Furore, are exposed to the magical action of the sun and sea of the Amalfi Coast. The charm of the geometry of the estate’s vineyards is joined by the beautiful wine cellar dug into the rock.

Since 1980, the year in which the winegrowing estate was established, Cantine Marisa Cuomo has belonged to Andrea Ferraioli and Marisa Cuomo, and it occupies an area of 10 hectares.

The selection of noble grapes, the search for the right degree of freshness and humidity, combined with the passage of time, old secrets handed down by the local winemakers and the advanced technology used by today’s wine technicians give life to wines of the finest quality, appreciated the world over.

Andrea Ferraioli and Marisa Cuomo, with oenologist Luigi Moio and the estate’s winegrowers, decide to focus on quality to stand out from the crowd in the Italian oenology sector, with wines with a taste that is just as unique and extraordinary as the Furore coast.

Explore Ravello and Amalfi coast (public bus) May 31

Discover Ravello

Ravello is considered one of the most romantic and beautiful small towns in Italy.

Perched on steep, terraced slopes it is a place blessed with lush gardens, quiet lanes, sleepy, sun-drenched corners. Perched high above sea level, Ravello will offer you unbelievable views over the azure coast below.

Highlights of your visit are the 11th-century cathedral and its two major villas, Villa Rufolo and villa Cimbrone, who have hosted many VIP travellers of the past such as Richard Wagner (both can be visited). Villa Cimbrone is now a hotel, where you can enjoy spending a night or organize a wedding party.

Discover the Valle dei Mulini (mills Valley)

A perfect experience for families, which combines nature, history and walking. The walk starts from the village of Pontone village (above Amalfi at 30 minutes driving) and goes downhill to Amalfi.

You will discover the most beautiful valley of the area, surrounded by a gorgeous nature, the history of the paper production in Amalfi and enjoy a great lunch in one of the best farm of the coast.

We will walk into one of the most amazing valley following the Canneto river. The scenery is amazing, we are in a chesnut forest and the clear water of the river jumps on the rocks creating lots of waterfalls and pools.

This is the place where in the 13th century local people started to produce paper using cloths, a technique learned from the arabs. Along the way we find the ruins of the old and abandoned paper mills, it's a unique example of industrial archeology in the south of Italy.

The deepest spot in the valley is a Natural Reserve with the most spectacular waterfalls, a kind of rain forest, absolutely unexpected. It's a protected area where the "Woodwardia radicans" grows, a pre-historic fern that can be 2 meters long!

The right end of our tour will be a great lunch in a farm settled overlooking the valley.

The walk is easy, the walking time is 3 hours, length 5 km ( 3 miles), difference in level: 250 mt going downhill + 100 mt uphill.
You will need good walking shoes
