Throughout the over 3,000 year history of ancient Egypt, magic— heka— was more than myth and fantasy; it was a worldview and way of life. It was from the synthesis of the civilizations and cultures of ancient Egypt and Greece that the magical traditions of the western world have been inherited.
In this 9-day tour of the sacred sites of ancient Egypt, scholar, author and practicing ceremonialist Ike Baker teaches the history, theory, and practice of Graeco-Egyptian theurgic magic.
Combining modern research and theurgic practice with primary texts and source materials, while insight gained over nearly two decades of practical theurgy, Baker will teach techniques of ancient theurgic spiritual practices on-location in some of the oldest and most important sites of the ancient world. Participants will learn in detail the nuanced and fascinating history of ancient Hermetic traditions, Graeco-Egyptian metaphysics, and ceremonial magic and forge connections with the living reservoirs of ancient magic, as well as experiencing the culture and landscapes of modern Egypt.
Who is this program for?
Graeco-Egyptian theurgic magic is a tradition for those interested in techniques of spiritual katharsis and development.
While theurgic magic and other forms of magic utilize the same or similar techniques, their telos or purpose may vary. The goal of theurgy is henosis - union with the divine and divine beings.
Many techniques are utilized to this end including forms of talismanic magic, divination, and the deity invocations, among others. However, these are all supplementary to the ultimate end of spiritual development. The theurgic techniques we will be practicing are ancient and there are several primary sources for them all dating back to the 2nd and 3rd century (CE) at the latest, and as far back as 1280 BCE.
This program will use what is historically available as well as techniques developed in more modern times, weaving together a living theurgic praxis which the novice and experienced practitioner can avail themselves of to any extent in their own personal practice. While this excursion will deal with history, theory, and practice of these rites - providing the practitioner with as thorough an introduction as possible while also moving into more advanced territory - we intend it to also serve as a personal initiatory event.
In journeying through Egypt, communing with the land, temple sites, energies, and gods of old, the practitioner will be given both training and space to have their own personal encounter with a tutelary spirit or deity. It begins with the selection of the new magical name, builds as we commune with energies and spirits at the ancient sacred sites, and culminates with a guided event aimed toward encounter and communion with the numinous.
