An Indigenous History Lesson in Adventure Central - Post TMAC Tour
In an area now known as Badger Bay, back in 1823, Shanawdithit, along with her sister and mother, encountered trappers while searching for food, and the three women were taken to St. John's. Unfortunately, this is where the mother and sister died of tuberculosis, while Shanawdithit would go on to the last known Beothuk. There is a deep First Nations history throughout this vast region, and we’d need more time to explore it all. For this trip, we’ll visit an area where Shanawdithit’s aunt was captured by John Peyton Jr., and travel by boat to an area once frequented by First Nations people who left evidence behind that is slowly being lost due to erosion. We’ll visit Miawpukek First Nation and participate in some cultural activities, and visit an archeological dig site at the Beothuk Interpretation Centre Provincial Historic Site.
