The Bagno Ebraico, Mikveh, or Jewish Bath of Siracusa that was discovered 20 years ago, when Amalia Daniel di Bagni was renovating a building she purchased to build a hotel.
We will journey three stories down a staircase, once filled with earth and debris and hidden behind a wall, to enter history. The passageway is cut into stone and extends 18 meters below the street. The ancient mikveh was a place for ritual and cleansing, as prescribed by Jewish religious tradition. Once we enter the chamber, we'll encounter five freshwater, spring fed tubs, also cut into the ground's stone and large enough for immersion.
Seeing the bath is fascinating. And learning about why it was hidden--because of the Spanish Inquisition that started in 1492--is emotional.
In this sacred and intimate space, once a part of a thriving community and then hidden for centuries, we will recite a traditional invocation of thanksgiving and peace.
This evening, dinner is at your leisure. We will furnish you with a list of recommended restaurants.

Ritual bread is an inherently traditional part of Southern Italian spiritualism that is rooted in pre-Christianity religious cults' that honored the Fertility Goddess and God, most notably Demeter and Dionysus.
With the establishment of Christianity, ritual bread was appropriated, transformed and incorporated into festivals honoring Christian saints who replaced the pre-Christian gods and goddesses.
